Modest sportswear checklist: 7 things to check before you buy
Online shopping for modest sportswear is hard because you can't test the fit. This checklist helps you spot a good pair before you pay.
1. Length
Look for the inseam in centimetres, not just "knee-length". Brands use the word loosely. Compare it with the measurement from the top of your thigh to just below your knee.
2. Fabric weight and opacity
Check the fabric composition and any mention of weight. Thin, shiny polyester can go see-through when stretched. Reviews and close-up photos help.
3. Inner layer
A built-in liner or leggings add cover and support. Check whether it's sewn in or separate, and how far down it reaches.
4. Waistband
A wide waistband and a drawstring keep shorts where they should be. An elastic-only band can roll or slip during exercise.
5. Pockets
Pockets are useful, but zips and hard parts matter for some sports. Look for secure pockets that don't bounce or poke out.
6. Seams and stretch
Flat or bonded seams don't rub. Four-way stretch means the shorts move with you.
7. Returns and sizing
Check the returns policy and size guide. A shop that makes returns easy lets you test the fit at home. Check who pays for return postage.
My own shorts at Sitr include a 14-day returns policy. See the FAQ for the details. If you're comparing brands, use this checklist on mine too.
Full disclosure: I'm the founder of Sitr, which makes awrah-covering shorts for men. I mention it where it's relevant, and I'll always say so when I do.
